Waitara's Town and Country Club has come under attack by a bungling burglar for the second time.

Yesterday morning an offender used an axe to break a pane in a door to gain entry to the club.

The offender ransacked the office and bar areas but left empty-handed.

It was the second time the club had been broken into in just over two weeks, the first time was in the early hours of November 18.

In both cases the offender climbed over the back fence into the garden area using ladders.

Detective Ross Lilley said police believed the same offender could be responsible for both burglaries.

"He's obviously battling to be a burglar," Mr Lilley said.

The offender left the axe and metal ladder, which appears to be from a fire escape, at the club.

In the first break-in, the offender used a sledgehammer to smash down doors about 2.40am, but left empty-handed after scouring the office and bar areas.

The offender left on a noisy dirt-bike and headed north over the bridge, and a motorbike was heard in the vicinity of High St East about 3am. The wooden ladder and sledgehammer were left at the scene.

Mr Lilley said there was no indication a motorbike was used in yesterday's burglary and it was not known how the offender left the area.

Police wanted to hear from anyone who had information about the burglaries and Mr Lilley can be contacted on 06 754 9208.

"We would like people to come forward with information about either of the ladders or if anyone in the High St East area knows of any loud motorbikes, possibly a trail bike of some description," Mr Lilley said.
