A 42-year-old man brandishing a knife on Opunake's main street scared passers-by last night.
Opunake police Constable Nigel Dey said he was called about 6pm by a motorist who had seen the man standing in the middle of the road.
"We located him and followed him back to a residential address while we waited for back-up from Hawera police,'' he said.
"Alcohol was a big factor in the man's behaviour.''
He will appear in Hawera Court this week on charges of possession of a weapon and disorderly behaviour and has been bailed to an Eltham address.
