A 59-year-old man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on Mawhitiwhiti Rd, near Normanby, early this morning.

Police Inspector Frank Grant said the accident occurred near the Waingongoro Bridge, about 5.40am.

There was extensive damage to the vehicle and the driver has been taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by St John ambulance with serious head injuries.

''What's happened is the vehicle has gone too close to the edge of the road, he's over corrected and then flipped,'' Mr Grant said.

''I can't confirm 100 per cent until we've done an investigation at the scene, and interviewed him, as to the cause of the accident.''

He said it was hard to indicate whether speed was a factor or if the driver had fallen asleep.

No other vehicles were involved and there is no indication that he's hit the bridge, it's just that he was near the bridge.

Will Aaron Cruden's omission hurt or help the All Blacks?

Hurt - he needs as much game time as possible.

Help - finally Beauden Barrett will get a proper run.

Hmmm - no biggie, just a temporary hitch.

Who is Cruden? I support the All Whites.
