Two female trampers, one with a broken ankle, were winched off Mt Taranaki's Stoney River Track yesterday morning.

The Palmerston North rescue helicopter conducted a search after a personal location beacon was activated.

Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand senior search and rescue officer Mike Roberts said the Palmerston North rescue helicopter was used because the Taranaki rescue helicopter's winch was out of service.

The injured woman, in her late 20s, fractured her ankle while crossing a boulder-strewn creek. A St John advanced paramedic was winched down to the pair.
