An unknown substance spilled at the intersection of State Highway 3 and State Highway 3A causing traffic delays this morning.
Taranaki Highway Patrol Sergeant Stephen Richardson said a container came off a vehicle about 7am spilling an unknown, light brown, substance over the northbound lanes.
"I'm not really sure what it is, we believe from the fire service that it might have something to do with the tanning of leather or tanning of hides," he said.
A section of road was coned off as a precaution until roading contractors were able to clear up the spill.
Mr Richardson said police would like to hear from anyone who saw or can identify the vehicle that the drum came off.
New Plymouth police can be contacted on 7595500.
