A 64-year-old man was cut from his car by firemen yesterday and taken to hospital after a collision at the intersection of Mangorei Rd and State Highway 3 about 3.30pm.

Sergeant George White said it appeared that the injured man had been turning right onto SH3 from the mountain side of Mangorei Rd when another car travelling from Inglewood to New Plymouth had hit his car head- on.

The driver's side of the car was caved in.

There were road works at the intersection. A 30kmh speed limit was in place, Mr White said.

What do you think of Maori trying to restrict access to the breakwater?

It's a ridiculous move and won't help.

Good on them for standing up for themselves.

It's a non-issue since they can't fully cut off access.

Don't know, don't care
