One baby was so determined to be Taranaki-born she arrived a month early - on Christmas morning.

Erin Kimberly Reeves was born at 9.09am yesterday to Douglas and Eva Reeves, who live in Auckland.

Eva said the arrival of her daughter was amazing, if a little unexpected.

The couple are visiting from Auckland.

Douglas, who is from Opunake, was thrilled his daughter was born a Taranaki local. "It's pretty cool."

Baby Erin was one of two babies born yesterday at Taranaki Base Hospital, though details of the second baby were unavailable to the Taranaki Daily News.

However, a child born in Christchurch is believed to be the first in New Zealand.

Connor Liam Scoon arrived at 12.04am at Christchurch Women's Hospital.

Mum Nicola Rich, who was due to give birth on January 3, joked with medical staff to turn the clock back so Connor would be born on Christmas Eve.
