About 1400 customers around Normanby and Hawera had to endure Christmas power cuts because of a fault on Powerco's electricity network.

Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh said the power cut occurred about 1.20pm yesterday because of a fault on an overhead line at Murray Ave in Hawera.

Supply was restored to all but 30 of those affected by 2.05pm.

All supply was restored by 3.30pm, Mr Marsh said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
