They just keep getting better.

Kiwi band Six60 played to a sell-out crowd of 2000 at Oakura's Butlers Reef last night, in the opening show of their summer tour.

The five-piece literally made themselves at home in the coastal Taranaki town, planting a letterbox out front and turning the stage into a scene similar to the humble abode where their journey began.

Following a top-notch performance by opening act Iva Lamkum, Six60 lit up the stage with their first number Don't Forget Your Roots.

I've never witnessed such an electric atmosphere rip through Butlers Reef.

If it wasn't for the familiarity of their songs, I would have thought I was watching a different band to the one I saw live for the first time three years ago.

Tours of Europe and the United States, as well as winning six gongs at the New Zealand Music Awards, appear to have done wonders for the band's confidence and stage presence.

With a voice that could make the alphabet sound like a number one hit, lead singer Matiu Walters was certainly a highlight, while the energy that radiated from his fellow band members deserves a mention.

Throughout the night, the crowd danced and sang to their most-loved tunes including Choice of the Chosen, Someone to be Around and Only to be.

And while it's always great to hear the songs we know and love, I was a little disappointed the set list only included one new track.

After being told the summer tour was an opportunity to road test their new material, I had been looking forward to hearing some fresh sounds.

Six60 now head to Lower Hutt and Riwaka before stopping in at Rhythm & Vines to see in the New Year.
