Surfers pulled two men to safety after their boat capsized attempting to cross the Waitara river mouth bar this morning.
Both men were wearing life jackets and the boat was later towed to shore, albeit still upside down.
Though calm, a large swell dissuaded most fisherman from attempting the bar crossing this morning Waitara police said.
The power boat was trying to cross the bar to sea but a wave tipped it onto its back end causing the engine to stall. Police said a second wave then tipped the boat over at about 8.40am.
