About 20 bulls spent yesterday afternoon stuck in an upturned cattle trailer in the middle of the Awakino Gorge.
The trailer unit rolled on a corner of State Highway 3 in the middle in the gorge about 2pm, blocking one lane.
Senior Constable Mark Brown said neither the driver nor any of the cattle appeared injured and no other vehicle was involved.
"He's been heading south towards New Plymouth and he's come around the corner and lost control of the trailer."
Mr Brown said 20 cows that had worked their way out of the truck section had been wandering around on the road before being herded into a nearby paddock. The bulls were still trapped inside the trailer.
"They don't seem to be too panicked or anything."
Speed was not likely to have been a factor in the crash, and Mr Brown said it looked like the wheels of the trailer had slid into the gutter which tipped it off balance.
Deep, long gouges were left in the roadside bank as the trailer toppled, he said.
The road was closed for a short period while a crane cleared the road and the bulls were freed.
