A South Taranaki farm house was completely destroyed by fire early this morning.
Firefighters were called to the scene on Hastings Rd, Mahoe, about 1.45am.
"We saw it as we were driving there," Eltham deputy chief fire officer Dave Waite said.
The whole house was in flames and it took three fire crews more than two hours to put out the blaze.
"When houses are going like that they are a real job to get under control," he said.
The man living at the property was woken by a loud bang and escaped the burning house, Mr Waite said.
"The only thing he managed to get out was some of his daughter's possessions," he said.
"He is very lucky to get away with his life."
The man's daughter was not at the property at the time of the fire.
A fire safety officer is investigating the cause of the fire
