Two cars and other machinery were destroyed in a garage fire early this morning.
Opunake fire chief Rodney Woods said firefighters were called to the address on Eltham Rd, Te Kiri, just after midnight.
"We could see the glow on the way. When we got there it was pretty much collapsed," Mr Woods said.
It took two fire crews about two hours to put out the fire and dampen down hot spots.
Mr Woods said everything in the garage was destroyed including two cars.
"They look just like a burnt out shell," he said.
"I think one was a double-cab Holden ute, one of only seven in the country."
Mr Woods said it was lucky the wind wasn't blowing another direction otherwise the house would have been in danger of catching fire.
"There is paint blistering on the house and the fire was so hot to broke some of the window," he said.
A fire safety officer is investigating the cause of the fire.
