Police are seeking the public's help to identify an offender who slashed a man's face with a bottle or glass.

The vicious attack happened about 1am inside New Plymouth's Club 55 on November 27.

"Police consider this a serious incident of violence that could have had resulted in a far worse outcome for both the victim and offender," McIntosh said.

"Police seek clarification of events as they occurred within the bar and would like to speak to any witnesses or people who have any information about this."

The victim had to be hospitalised due to his injuries.

McIntosh said anyone with information about the assault or the identity of the offender should contact Senior Constable Craig Walsh at the New Plymouth police station or pass on the details through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
