Competition leaders Tukapa's unbeaten run was almost halted in senior A rugby today.

A penalty try was all that separated Tukapa and Coastal as the home side snuck home 15-10 on a muddy ground at Sanders Park.

The penalty try, awarded by referee Richard Kelly, came after Tukapa were prevented from scoring a pushover try from a scrum.

Coastal hammered away at the Tukapa line late in the game but just couldn't get over to level things up.

Clifton took outright second with a 35-26 win over fellow top four side Southern at Tikorangi.

The home side got off to a flying start and were enjoying a 26-12 lead at one stage before Southern roared back into the match.

It was tense stuff near the end with tempers tested and the referee coming under a lot of pressure.

New Plymouth Old Boys scored three late tries to beat Stratford 48-17 at Vogeltown Park.

Spotswood United grabbed another major scalp for the year when they beat Inglewood 23-19 at Yarrow Stadium.
The loss heaped more pressure on Inglewood who have won just twice in 2013.

Clifton 35 Southern 26
NPOB 48 Stratford 17
Spotswood Utd 23 Inglewood 19
Tukapa 15 Coastal 10
