A Waitara family were left out in the cold when their house was gutted in a blaze last night.
Two fire appliances from Waitara and one from New Plymouth attended the Cracroft St fire, which was fully involved when they arrived at 7pm.
New Plymouth Station Officer Maurice Kemsley said 14 firefighters fought the inferno with three hoses.
The family was home at the time of the fire and initially there was confusion over whether or not there was someone still inside.
"There were three children and their father in the house and we weren't sure if everyone was out so we had to do a search of the property," Mr Kemsleysaid.
Everyone was eventually accounted for and the family went to the neighbours'.
Firefighters were at the scene until 1am this morning and fire investigations are continuing.
A Kaponga family were also left homeless when their house was destroyed by fire late last night.
Firefighters were called to the home about 10pm.
