A driver attempting to park her car in Hawera in the early hours of yesterday morning ended up smashing a shop's front door.

The driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake and slammed into a bollard, which was sent flying into the door of Loveridge's Lotto about 2am. Police have spoken to the driver.

Shop owner Josie Loveridge said she was roused out of bed when her shop's alarm went off, and saw the driver rush to inspect the damage.

"It was very dark at night, and then I heard someone say ‘holy s...'," Mrs Loveridge said. "The vehicle then disappeared by the time I went downstairs."

Mrs Loveridge was unfazed by the incident. "I went out, got the broom, and cleaned it up. Then Kelsen's Glass and Glazing came by at 2.30am and fixed it all up for us."

Hawera police said the driver had since identified herself.

The driver also stopped by the shop to apologise to Mrs Loveridge.

"It's all good now," Mrs Loveridge said.
