People taking a walk on the foreshore on Friday were surprised to see a fully grown seal sprawled out on a wooden bench.
Affectionately named ''Charlie'' by passers-by, the seal was enjoying a nap in the sun and was not concerned about being the centre of attention.
Visitors to the region took the opportunity to snap photos of the seal with their smartphones Many Taranaki residents wondered if the visiting mammal was Gusto - the seal who last year became a resident of the rocky forefront of a New Plymouth restaurant of the same name.
A handful of walkers thought the seal might be sick, but the Department of Conservations aid it was not unheard of for seals to come ashore to rest after rough seas.
