Spotswood United's Toa Halafihi stretches out for what many thought was the winning try. He was denied by referee Bruce Jordan.

The referees came under the spotlight in senior A club rugby today, with two crucial decisions influencing the outcome of two crunch matches.

Bruce Jordan ruled outstanding Spotswood United flanker Toa Halafihi had knocked the ball on in attempting to score a last minute try which would have won his side the match against New Plymouth Old Boys at Vogeltown Park.

However, photographic evidence appeared to show he had slammed the ball on the ground.

The 22-20 loss drops Spotswood United out of the top four at the expense of Clifton who snuck a 36-27 win over Coastal at Tikorangi.

Referee Paul Williams was in the gun in that match after he appeared to signal a shot at goal for Clifton, only for Beaudein Waaka to take a quick tap and score a try.

The decision to allow the try incensed Coastal coach Joe Lawn.

Elsewhere, leaders Tukapa scored nine tries in their 51-15 win at Stratford, while Southern thumped Inglewood 34-3 at Hawera last night.
