A man has been charged with sex offences, assaults and kidnapping involving a woman and a 7-year-old girl.
Allan Neil Rosewarne, 48, appeared in the the New Plymouth District Court on Wednesday. He was refused bail.
Rosewarne is charged with 10 counts including sexually violating a woman, kidnapping, assaulting the 7-year-old, three of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and assault.
The alleged offences date from 1998 to 2007.
It is believed more charges will be laid.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Royston Betteridge said police strongly opposed Rosewarne being released on bail.
Defence lawyer Turitea Bolstad argued that the charges were historical and that Rosewarne could be bailed to stay with family in New Plymouth.
Judge Max Courtney declined bail, remanding Rosewarne in custody for a bail hearing on Wednesday.
