Four people, including an 84-year-old woman with serious injuries, were taken to hospital following a crash on State Highway 3 on Saturday.
The two-car collision happened about 1.30pm at the intersection with Airport Drive just north of Bell Block.
Police, firefighters and St John ambulance staff attended the scene. The state highway was closed for about 45 minutes while emergency services worked at the scene and diversions were put in place.
Firefighters cut some of the occupants out of the vehicles so they could be taken to hospital.
Constable Rob Keen, Waitara, said police were speaking to witnesses of the crash.
"It appears a vehicle has exited Airport Drive and has turned right to head to New Plymouth and has turned into the path of a north-bound vehicle," Mr Keen said.
"The two vehicles have collided head on."
He said an 84-year-old woman had suffered serious injuries and the police Serious Crash Unit had been advised.
Meanwhile, police attended another serious crash near the intersection of SH3 and Mahoetahi Rd about 10.15pm.
Nobody was injured in the collision.
Mr Keen said it didn't appear alcohol or speed were involved and inquiries were continuing.
"It appears that one of the vehicles has crossed the centre-line into the path of the other."
