Smoke filling the windows of a house on Brooklands Rd New Plymouth this morning turned out to be pest eradicators at work.
Concerned neighbours who spotted the smoke and were unaware of what was happening rang the Fire Service about 11am.
Two fire trucks arrived to find an apologetic Pestaway worker outside the house who said they were about to contact the New Plymouth Fire Brigade.
Station officer Jason Crowe said the brigade received a few similar callouts.
''It's a bit frustrating.''
He asked that anyone intending to use smoke bombs in their homes to first contact their local fire brigade to let them know.
''And then if the neighbours call in to report smoke we can tell them what's happening,'' Mr Crowe said.
The Pestaway worker said the Brookland Rd house owners had called them in to eradicate an infestation of Argentine ants.
The firm was currently dealing with about three similar eradications a day.
