About 200 South Taranaki children tested their endurance at the annual Hawera schools cross- country held at the A&P Showgrounds yesterday.
Pupils from Turuturu, Hawera, Tawhiti, St Joseph's, and Normanby schools competed for bragging rights as they ran up to three kilometres under the sweltering sun.
The cross-country drew in pupils aged 8 to 11, with the 8 to 10-year-olds running a two kilometre race, while their 11-year-old counterparts dug in an extra kilometre for their run.
Organiser Mike Legge said the day went very well.
"I'm pleased with it and we had positive comments," Mr Legge said.
Runners will proceed to compete in the Taranaki Cross- Country Championships on September 25.
This year's championships is an open event, giving everyone a chance to participate.
