An Inglewood family was shaken awake by a large jolt this morning.
Nicola Knight said the 2.7 magnitude earthquake had given her family a bit of a fright.
''It was a hell of a big shake, a really short, sharp shock.
''I told my husband to go and check if the mountain had blown up.''
Geonet reported the quake was centred in Inglewood at a depth of 5km at 3.29am.
In Inglewood 54 people reported feeling the quake, along with two people in Egmont Village, two in Stratford and one in New Plymouth.
