A 30-year-old New Plymouth man has died after being hit by a bus in Zanzibar, off East Africa.
Anthony Charlton was on the island with his father and brother for a family wedding when he was killed on Thursday night.
No further details have yet been confirmed about the nature of the accident.
Originally from England, Mr Charlton had grown up in Botswana but lived in New Plymouth for a number of years.
Known as Ants, he had celebrated his 30th birthday just one week ago.
On his Facebook page, 103 friends had posted on his birthday timeline and dozens have since posted messages of condolence and grief.
Mr Charlton was a partner in his parent's company, PestAway, in New Plymouth. His father and brother remain in Zanzibarn.
In May, Mr Charlton featured in the Taranaki Daily News when he took reporter Hannah Fleming out for a day's work as a pest controller.
