A human skull has been found near the mouth of the Kaupokonui River in South Taranaki.
Police have covered the remains which were found in sand about 20 metres in from the river.
Detective Sergeant Chris Allenmann said a man hunting for pumice stumbled across the skull earlier today.
He said police would start a scene examination shortly.
They are unsure if there is a skeleton attached to the skull, which is just bone, and it was too early to guess how old it might be.
