Fashion fix from far-off lands
Highlighting Taranaki talentHELEN HARVEY
Tonight the Taranaki Daily News Fashion Art Awards will take the audience around the world.
This is the 12th year the awards have highlighted the talent of Taranaki designers and dancers.
There are 139 entries, pretty close to the 143 last year.
The theme is Around the World's Continents and the designers had made costumes to represent all the continents, director Lois Finderup said.
The six categories include The Asias: Off the Wall; Arctic/Antarctica: Illumination Art; and Europe: Bizarre Bras.
It took a year to organise the event, Mrs Finderup said, and by the end of the show she has already come up with next year's theme. "It's lots of fun designing it all."
It's also lots of work.
"We started five weeks ago with the dancing, and models started rehearsing last week.
"And it's been every night this week."
Choreographer Tansi Williams enlisted the help of other choreographers to work with 150 dancers who will showcase, among others, Irish, Latin, Carribean and Highland dancing, as well as Bollywood.
Mrs Williams said the extra lighting this year had increased the workload.
"If the technical side doesn't go right, it's really obvious."
