New Plymouth dog rangers want proof a pitbull type dog has been put down after it seriously attacked another smaller dog.

Senior animal control officer Jim Aitken said the attack happened last night in the South Rd, Spotswood area.

Mr Aitken said the smaller dog was in a critical condition under a vet's care.

The owner of the pitbull has told dog rangers she had had the dog put down but Mr Aitken said they were still trying to confirm those details.

''We would not be diligent if we did not confirm that such a dangerous dog has been euthanasied.''

Mr Aitken said investigations into the attack were ongoing but urged dog owners to keep an eye on their pets at all times.

''There will be repercussions on the dog owner.''
