A 72-year-old man who sexually molested a young woman visiting his house has escaped further penalty by paying her $10,000 in reparation.
Darcy George Mace was sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday after admitting two counts of indecent assault.
On April 11 when the young woman went to Mace's home he asked for a hug but when they hugged he grabbed her buttocks and groped her between her legs.
Judge Allan Roberts said the impact on Mace's 24-year-old victim was far-reaching.
She now felt "disgusting, cheap and ashamed" and had marked difficulties dealing with older men.
Mace's wife had asked for her husband's name to be suppressed, writing to the court that the stress due to the prosecution had caused her heart problems.
But Judge Roberts said he was not satisfied the medical problems were "solely at the door of the offending".
The judge declined to order name suppression, telling Mace "it was part of and parcel of the penalty you must pay for the offending".
Mace, a first offender who handed himself in to police, was convicted and an order was made for emotional harm reparation for the $10,000 which Mace had offered her.
Mace was also given a first strike warning.
