Two 18-year-old Opunake teenagers allegedly tried to steal a car armed with a knife early yesterday.

The two, Tyler Fransen and Maku Temaire, appeared in the New Plymouth District Court at noon wearing white police overalls.

Judge Allan Roberts acknowledged the police were opposed to bail but because of their young age he released the two on strict bail conditions including a night-time curfew. Neither are allowed to enter Opunake nor associate with one another.

Alcohol and illegal drugs are banned. Both were remanded to appear on January 6.
