A 70-year-old pohutukawa tree on New Plymouth's Te Henui walkway will be chopped down because the district council fears it could break apart in a storm.

An accessway from Watson St to the walkway will be closed tomorrow and Friday while the tree, located at the rear of the East End Croquet Club is removed.
