A Stratford man who has been on the run is now wanted for stealing a Nissan 4x4 vehicle from Whanganui.

Matthew Joao Edwards, 22, has warrants for his arrest.

Police want to talk to him about the burglary of a rural property in Whanganui on Wednesday.

Detective Drew Bennett, of Stratford, says anyone who knows where he is should not approach him but ring 111.

Edwards had connections in Stratford and throughout the Central North Island, Mr Bennett said.

"We believe that someone may be helping Edwards evade police and I want to remind them that assisting him may lead to prosecution," he said.

Police recovered the stolen vehicle late yesterday afternoon in a remote area east of Eltham and arrested a 17-year-old male but they did not find Edwards.

Mr Bennett advised people to protect their property as well as their neighbour's by removing opportunities for burglars. "Police appreciate it when people call about things not quite right in their neighbourhood. If you have a gut feeling that something is wrong then it probably is," Mr Bennett said.

Edwards is described as being of Maori descent, medium build, about 5ft 8in in height with black hair and hazel- coloured eyes. Anyone with information can contact Detective Bennett on (06) 765 8869 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

What do you think of Maori trying to restrict access to the breakwater?

It's a ridiculous move and won't help.

Good on them for standing up for themselves.

It's a non-issue since they can't fully cut off access.

Don't know, don't care
