Mystery explosions and "big thuds" felt on the outskirts of New Plymouth on the weekend were the result of a farmer's late night rubbish fire.
The New Plymouth fire brigade attended the fire burning on Carrington Rd about 11pm.
Senior station officer David Utumapu said it was unclear what the man had been burning and the fire brigade had not seen or heard any of the explosions, but neighbours had reported them.
"I expect it was flammable liquid or gas."
The man's property was in the rural fire district where controlled burn-offs are allowed, Mr Utumapu said.
"But there's no burning anything outside of daylight hours. It tends to frighten people a bit when they see glowing in the sky."
On the Taranaki Daily News Facebook page people reported feeling or hearing the explosions or bangs in Carrington St, Junction Rd, Heta Rd, Upjohn St, Frankleigh Park.
