A Waitara couple's Christmas plans have been abandoned after a fire in their garage destroyed their Landcruiser today.
The blaze in Mervyn and Mary Corin's Norman St garage started about 2.20pm and was well involved when the fire brigade arrived.
Mr Corin said the fire had spoiled the couple's plans to visit family in Auckland over the holiday period.
''That put a dampener on it - the fire hoses,'' he said as he watched firefighters pull the garage apart to ensure the flames were out.
Fire safety officers would investigate what had caused the blaze, senior station officer Maurice Kelly said.
