Witt celebrated one of its biggest certificate graduations last night.
More than 2200 students finished the academic year with a certificate from the polytech and of those 253 made their way across the stage at last night's ceremony.
The graduates came from 46 different programmes and Witt director of marketing and student management systems Danny Hall said it was a special day for the town.
"Graduation is a time when we celebrate the success of the students and their journey and we share it with their family, friends and tutors," he said.
Mr Hall said the polytechnic had a responsibility to help local businesses employ well trained, qualified staff.
"These grads will help to meet the needs of the community," he said.
This year the school launched three new certificate programmes; a certificate in trade skills, a national certificate in marae catering and a NCEA vocational pathways certificate.
"It's good to have a set of people who are our first from a course," he said.
Because of the earthquake strengthening work currently under way at the TSB Showplace, the certificate graduation was held at New Plymouth Boys' High School's Ryder Hall.
The polytech's diploma and degree graduation will take place at the TSB Showplace next May.
