Power was cut to around 7000 properties in New Plymouth on Saturday morning due to a fault on Powerco's electricity network.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the power cut occurred around 3am when an 11,000 volt underground cable failed, affecting customers in and around the central business district.
"Supply was restored to around 5000 properties within an hour and all supply was restored by 6.15am," Mr Marsh said.
Repairs to the damaged section of cable will be made of the next few days, he said.
