The organisers of Oakura's New Year's Day Beach Carnival are hoping the weather forecasters have got it wrong again.
After a miserable week of rain and wind Taranaki could be in for some decent weather to help farewell 2013.
However the start of 2014 isn't looking too flash.
MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett said the skies should finally clear today and well into the night.
"Mother Nature's actually finally got the memo about New Year's Eve and the holiday, and realised we could do with a bit of a break," he said. "Believe it or not, Tuesday looks much better."
But it might be worth sleeping in on New Year's Day, he said.
Mr Corbett said yet another low was barrelling down on the province but with any luck it wouldn't hang around for long.
Carnival co-organiser Sara Greensill-van Prehn said they would roll with the punches on New Year's Day.
Three days later the Opunake and Lakeside Lions carnival is on from 10am to about 4pm.
Mr Corbett said the run of barbecue-ruining weather was because of a couple of low pressure systems hanging round for a bit too long.
