I was absolutely disgusted and shocked to read a letter written about Jenny Gellen, the principal of the Waitara High School, and our Waitara police officers (letters, December 28).
How can you allow a letter like this to be published without checking the facts of what is written?
Why would you allow this rubbish given any space at all when you had Jenny Gellen on the front page of the Taranaki Daily News two days earlier as the first of five nominees for the 2013 Daily News person of the year?
Without doubt she has made a significant contribution to our community, despite what the letter writer says, and the reward she has had is to see change happen, with the students' increased achieving in her seven years at the helm.
The school has changed for the better under her leadership. Waitara has certainly had some excellent principals since opening in 1947 and it is not fair to say they have all been dreadful.

Is it any wonder why Mrs Gellen is leaving, with comments and behaviour like this?
Waitara is pushing forward and is leaving behind this type of personal, uncalled for, derogatory comments because of the commitment of people like Mrs Gellen.
