An 18-year-old man swore loudly and had to be restrained by police in court yesterday.

Tyler McGlone, 18, appeared in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday where he was further remanded in custody on charges of assaulting his former partner and threatening her.

McGlone spoke to the judge saying all he had wanted to do was to give his former stepson a present because he had not seen him for his birthday.

Police argued against McGlone being released on bail.

Judge Roberts agreed.

As he was forcibly taken away, McGlone repeatedly screamed: "All I wanted to do was give him his present."

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
