Oil and gas exploration is to take place in the Great South Basin off the bottom of the South Island.

Joint venture parties Shell New Zealand, OMV New Zealand Ltd and Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd have just announced they will  take up an option to drill an exploration well in an exploration licence area off the shore between Invercargill and Dunedin.

The timing of the drilling programme will be determined following detailed planning, and will most probably begin early in the 2016 summer, said Rob Jager, country chairman for Shell NZ, in New Plymouth this afternoon.

The Taranaki Daily News understands much of the drilling campaign will be controlled from New Plymouth.
