Picnic baskets popped open and blankets were spread out as thousands gathered to catch singers Jackie Thomas and Benny Tipene perform yesterday.
The concert at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands was part of the Festival of Lights activities and spectators from the very young to the very old huddled for an evening of entertainment.
Thomas was the winner of the New Zealand series of The X-Factor, while Tipene finished third.
Richard and Beverley Luscombe, of New Plymouth, were delighted to be able to watch Thomas perform.
The Luscombes said they had come to support their "home girl". Thomas hailed from the West Coast, where the Luscombes had lived for 17 years, before moving back to New Plymouth in 2012.
"She's a lovely girl," Mrs Luscombe said. "I was thrilled to see her win X-Factor."
Jasmine Stone, 12, of New Plymouth, thought Tipene was "cool", while mum Sheree said his music "really suits" the outdoor environment. Both were also fans of Thomas.
Also out to see Thomas in action were Barbara and Brent Jury, of Sentry Hill, who said they were very "music oriented".
