A woman was sentenced to community detention and ordered to pay back the money she fraudulently obtained from Work and Income when she appeared in the Hawera District Court yesterday.

Denise Susan Madgwick appeared before Judge Allan Roberts on eight charges related to benefit fraud.

From March 2011 to October 2012 Madgwick received the unemployment benefit while she was in a de facto relationship.

She was sentenced to four months' community detention, 150 hours of community work and ordered to pay back $20,998.79 at a rate of $20 per week.
