Three swimmers who got stranded on a rock at sea yesterday evening were rescued by helicopter.

Two men and a woman were picked up from a rock near the back of Snapper Rock on Back Beach after being sucked out by a rip about 6:30pm.

The Taranaki Community Rescue Helicopter returned the trio to the beach where police were waiting.

Helicopter chief crewman Jayden Strickland said the people had cuts from sharp rocks and other injuries and one person was distressed.
