A New Plymouth teenager has embarked on a grammar crusade and is offering her linguistic skills for free.

Megan Smith, 17, said she wanted to help people increase the success rate of their advertisements by improving their spelling.

"I spend a lot of time on Facebook and buy and sell sites and the spelling is pretty horrendous," Ms Smith said.

So she has placed an advertisement on New World supermarket's notice board offering her services. Like most crusades, it's slow to gain momentum as no one has been in touch with her since she placed the ad on January 3.

Improper use of words like "your" and "you're", and the ever-confusing "their, there, they" are her pet hates.

Ms Smith said she was obsessed with the usage of correct grammar and wanted to help Kiwis "spruce up" on their mother tongue.

However, not all of her peers share her enthusiasm on attaining grammar perfection.

"Most 17-year-olds probably don't bother," Ms Smith said. "A lot of people give me a hard time about it but the geek thing is quite trendy right now."

The internet is Ms Smith's tool of trade when it comes to brushing up on her grammatical skills.

"There are places like The Onion and other websites that make posters pointing out grammatical errors in a funny way so people can laugh at themselves," she said.

Having perfect grammar is pretty easy, Ms Smith said.

"If you read something out loud then you can quickly notice if something makes sense or not."

Anyone struggling with the grammar monster can contact Ms Smith on 027 417 5155 for help.
