A dangerous rockface on Mt Messenger is under attack by diggers and traffic should be flowing smoothly by tomorrow.
Crews spent yesterday excavating the cracked section of rock which had been causing headaches for engineers. They were worried the rockface could collapse on to State Highway 3 and sever Taranaki's northern link.
The work has meant the stretch of road has been down to one lane and controlled by stop-go road workers while it is repaired.
"Crews are making excellent progress, and we're on track to have the job substantially completed just in time to allow two-way traffic through for the weekend," New Zealand Transport Agency regional roads manager David McGonigal said.
"We'd like to thank road users for their patience while we have this busy road down to one lane, and we'd also like to applaud the crews at Downer for their hard work," Mr McGonigal said.
