A trio of thieves who allegedly broke into dozens of cars in Bell Block have been arrested.

Senior sergeant Thomas McIntyre said two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old had been spotted by a member of the public at 2am today and were later caught by police.

Mr McIntryre said they admitted breaking into 20 cars and trying their luck at getting into another 40 which were locked.

''They're walking down the street trying the doors of every vehicle.''

The boys would take anything they could from the cars, including cash, phones and other electronics.

''Anything that is light and shiny.''

Mr McIntrye said it was a good reminder for people to lock their cars and remove valuables or keep them secure or hidden.

The two 17-year-olds would be facing multiple charges of stealing from cars and are to appear in court tomorrow.

The 16-year-old would be referred to Youth Aid.
