The Taranaki Rescue Helicopter had a busy Waitangi Day yesterday attending to one callout after another.

A day hiker was winched from Mt Taranaki around 12.30pm after sustaining moderate leg injuries while climbing the mountain.

The male patient was treated on the scene by St John paramedics before being flown to Taranaki Base Hospital.

At 2pm, the rescue chopper responded to a callout at a farm in Okato to attend an 11-year-old boy who sustained serious leg injuries after falling off a trail bike.

He was treated on the scene by St John paramedics and was later flown to base hospital for observation.
