Oakura residents are being warned not to drink the town's water this afternoon, due to a damaged water main.
A contractor working on a new subdivision hit and damaged the water main that connects the town to the reservoir about 3.30pm, the New Plymouth District Council says.
If residents use reticulated water before the break is repaired, they could draw dirty water through the network and into their appliances.
Council staff are on their way to the site to assess the damage, after which they will have an idea of how long it will take to repair the main.
