Hawera's dog pound was broken into and two dogs taken on Monday night.

Sergeant Lincoln McCrea said about 7.30pm a three year old grey beardie cross and a six month old tan and white pitbull were taken from the Beach Rd premises.

Police are calling for witnesses and are particularly interested in any sightings of a green ute near the Beach Rd or Fairfield Rd areas around the time of the burglary.

Mr McCrea said the ute possibly had a canopy on the back at the time.

Anyone with any information should contact Hawera Police on 06 278 0260.
