A seriously ill New Plymouth woman who was caught selling her own prescription drugs has escaped a jail sentence.

Solo mother Celeste Stephanie Mottram, 37, pleaded guilty to supplying class A and B drugs last year.

In the New Plymouth District Court on Friday, Mottram's lawyer Kylie Pascoe asked for a community-based sentence rather than a jail term.

She said her client was very ill.

She was on dialysis four hours a day and had other complications including an enlarged liver, heart and spleen.

She was also recently diagnosed with pneumonia and had an enlarged heart.

"She is a single mother with children who are reliant on her."

The two separate drug-dealing charges were at the lower level.

She made little profit in relation to the offending.

Mottram had no previous offending of this type.

"She is very sorry and regrets what she did," Ms Pascoe said.

Judge de Ridder said the start point for sentencing was 12 months' jail.

However, she was entitled to credit for her early guilty plea for the two incidents.

The judge said he was concerned at the content of the probation report which was "not terribly favourable to you".

Mottram was sentenced to six months' community detention with a curfew daily from 7pm to 7am and 100 hours' community work, which can be converted to training schemes.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
